CHICAGO -- If the infield ever freezes over during a game, the Chicago White Sox might have found just the guy to get around the bases quickly.

According to a post on his Instagram account, Olympic short-track speed skater Eddy Alvarez has signed a minor league contract with the White Sox and is in Arizona to begin working out with the club’s influx of minor league talent. Alvarez even posted a video of him signing his White Sox contract.

The White Sox confirmed the signing.

Alvarez, 24, won a silver medal in the 5,000-meter relay at the Sochi Olympics in February. He was a standout high school shortstop in Miami and in 2011 played one season of baseball at Salt Lake Community College.

"Playing pro baseball has definitely been a goal of mine," Alvarez told People magazine in February. “There were times when I thought of dropping skating completely and just focusing on baseball.”
