CLEVELAND -- Chicago White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko said Friday that it shouldn't have been a huge surprise to see his former teammate, Carlos Quentin, charge Zack Greinke on Thursday night, given the history between the two.

Zack Greinke's trade from the Royals to the Brewers on Saturday ends up being good news for the White Sox, but not for obvious reasons.

Tim Larson/Icon SMIBoth the White Sox and Twins had success against Zack Greinke.
The White Sox have actually fared well overall against the former Cy Young Award winner. Greinke has a career 6-10 record against the White Sox with a 4.23 ERA in 24 appearances (21 starts). So in that sense, they are sad to see him leave the AL Central.

Although as John Lowe pointed out in the Detroit Free Press, Greinke has five quality starts in his last seven outings against the White Sox.

The Twins have been even better overall against Greinke and no longer have him to beat up on in division play. Greinke is 3-8 against the Twins in 19 appearances (15 starts) with a 4.90 ERA. So maybe it’s good for the White Sox that he’s gone.

Even when Greinke was at his best, during his 2009 Cy Young season, it was the Twins that handled him best in division play. Greinke had a 3.46 ERA against Minnesota, while posting a 2.31 mark against the White Sox. But the White Sox beat him twice that year, while the Twins got to him just once.

When it comes to the other teams in the division, maybe the White Sox would like it better if Greinke stuck around. He has a 3.80 ERA against the Indians and a 2.84 mark against the Tigers.

There seem to be mixed signals when it comes to Greinke’s departure from the division, but with his potential to be as good as anybody on the mound, it isn’t like any AL Central is about to shed a tear that he’s gone.
