BUFFALO -- Against long odds, the Chicago Blackhawks lead the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 after two periods of play.

The Hawks have been playing with five defensemen since late in the first period, when Niklas Hjalmarsson got kicked out of the game for hitting Sabres forward Jason Pominville from behind.

The Hawks killed off the ensuing five-minute major penalty, then tied the game on 19-year-old Nick Leddy ’s first career goal, and finally took the lead on Marian Hossa’s second goal of the season.

Nick Boynton barely got his pass to Leddy at the point, and Leddy’s shot was redirected into the net off the skate of the Sabres’ Shaone Morrison. Jonathan Toews retrieved the puck for the Hawks rookie.

Hossa received a pass from Bryan Bickell at the Sabres’ blue line and raced in on goaltender Ryan Miller. After faking a big slap shot, Hossa fired one past Miller’s right side for the Hawks’ first lead of the game.

Patrick Kane, playing in his hometown, scored the Hawks first-period goal.

Buffalo scored at 14 seconds and then again at 2:43 to take an early 2-0 lead, but the Hawks have dominated since the five-minute penalty kill. They outshot the Sabres 17-9 in the second period.
