First-period wrap: Blackhawks 0, Stars 0

DALLAS -- The Chicago Blackhawks and Dallas Stars are scoreless after the first period at American Airlines Arena in their season opener.

Both teams had several good offensive chances but goalies Corey Crawford and Kari Lehtonen were up to the task, especially Crawford, who stopped 13 shots in the opening 20 minutes. Several saves came at point-blank range and Crawford twice stopped Jamie Benn, who had good looks.

The Hawks defense looked ragged and got beat in several different ways. On the first shift of the game, Sean O'Donnell was slow to the corner as a Stars player got around him, but Crawford eventually made the save. Later, Duncan Keith fumbled a puck at the Stars blue line, allowing Benn a mini-breakaway. Brent Seabrook turned a puck over late in the period, but again Crawford was there.

Marian Hossa had several good chances for the Hawks on offense and Jonathan Toews had a point-blank chance on the power play, but they weren’t able to dent the back of the net.

Crawford was the story of the first period.
