First period: Hawks 1, Avalanche 0

DENVER -- The Chicago Blackhawks lead the Colorado Avalanche 1-0 after the first period at the Pepsi Center.

The Hawks were stuck in their own zone for much of the period but still left with the lead thanks to a nifty play but Nick Leddy, Dan Carcillo and Jonathan Toews. Leddy found Carcillo behind the Avs’ net and he slid a sweet pass to Toews in front who roofed a backhander for the lone score of the period.

The Hawks were outshot 13-6 and that stat was indicative of where most of the play was. Corey Crawford came up with several big saves, including a close in one on Paul Stastny during an Avs’ power play. It was his best of the 13. Colorado also hit the crossbar once.
