CHICAGO -- The Chicago Blackhawks trail the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 after two periods on Saturday at the United Center.

The teams tallied two goals apiece in the middle period, although the Hawks haven’t had many great offensive chances despite putting 21 shots on goal. They briefly tied it at 1-1 on a Michael Frolik steal and goal. The Avs’ Erik Johnson was being pressured behind his net and put a puck near the slot which Frolik jumped on and then got by Semyon Varlamov.

Colorado re-took the lead and extended it on goals originating from behind the Hawks net. David Jones shot one at Corey Crawford and it rattled around and got past him for the tally. Later, Gabriel Landeskog crashed the net and put one past Crawford on a feed from Ryan O'Reilly.

But the Hawks scored a huge power-play goal with under a minute to play in the period as Jonathan Toews scored on a rebound of a Duncan Keith shot. Andrew Brunette was in front of the net causing havoc for the Avalanche.

Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville has mixed up some of his lines -- Viktor Stalberg and Daniel Carcillo switched roles -- but little offense was generated until late in the period.
