COLUMBUS -- The Chicago Blackhawks lead the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-1 after one period at Nationwide Arena.

Jonathan Toews has both Chicago scores, but the story of both them is about the Hawks defense. Both primary assists came from blue-liners as Brent Seabrook and Nick Leddy were credited with the helpers.

Seabrook started around the Jackets’ net with the puck before sending one on goal where Toews avoided a check for the rebound score. Later, Nick Leddy led a rush into the offensive zone before passing to Toews who netted his second. It was a weak goal given up by Columbus netminder Steve Mason.

The Hawks had the puck in the offensive zone for most of the period outshooting the Jackets 16 to 5. Defensemen led several offensive rushes besides the ones that resulted in goals. It’s something the Hawks have been wanting to see more of.

Columbus scored on the power play when Grant Clitsome found a shooting lane from the point.
