1st-period wrap: Blackhawks 1, Flames 1

CALGARY, Alberta -- The Chicago Blackhawks and Calgary Flames were tied 1-1 after the first period at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Friday night.

Calgary struck first when Lee Stempniak got around Duncan Keith and shot one past Corey Crawford for the early 1-0 Flames lead. But the Hawks got the goal right back when Jonathan Toews made an equally impressive move around a Calgary defender before centering a pass to Viktor Stalberg, who tapped it in with a man draped all over him.

The pace was to the Hawks’ liking in the opening 20 minutes as both teams had some decent scoring chances. Crawford made a big save on a quick developing breakaway by Alex Tanguay late in the period. Earlier, Mikka Kiprusoff had a good one on Toews on a close-in rebound try.

Calgary had 11 shots on net, the Hawks had 10.
