Second-period wrap: Hawks 2, Jackets 1
In some ways the Hawks are fortunate to be leading in the game considering the amount of the time they’ve spent killing penalties. Twice they’ve been called for instigator infractions -- on Steve Montador and Jamal Mayers -- for taking on Jared Boll of Columbus.
Boll hit Niklas Hjalmarsson high into the boards in the second period when Mayers jumped him but it was the Hawks who scored on the Jackets’ power play. Marian Hossa stole a puck in the neutral zone and found Dave Bolland with a pretty back-hand pass in the slot for Bolland’s 10th goal of the year.
But Columbus tied it after a point shot was put back in by RJ Umberger while Duncan Keith and Nick Leddy stood near the crease unable to clear the puck or the two Jackets standing with them.
The Hawks regained the lead after Patrick Kane found Viktor Stalberg in the slot with a nifty feed for Stalberg’s 10th of the year as well. Jonathan Toews had an assist on the play as the trio, along with the defense, cycled the puck well in the offensive zone.
The Hawks killed off a four minute power play in the first period when Montador was given an extra penalty for instigating a fight while wearing a visor.
