Playoff update: Hawks near lock for No. 6

With the Detroit Red Wings’ thrilling 3-2 shootout win over the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday, the Hawks are inching closer to being locked in as the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference.
It could happen as soon as Thursday night as they, the Wings and the Nashville Predators are all in action. Detroit is three points ahead of the Hawks as the No. 4 seed while the Predators are the No. 5 seed, two points ahead of Chicago.
If the Hawks lose in regulation to the Minnesota Wild they can do no better than the No. 6 seed. If Nashville and Detroit win, no matter what the Hawks do, they’ll be locked in at No. 6 as well. It would make the regular season finale against the Wings meaningless for Chicago.
Detroit hosts New Jersey while Nashville does the same with Dallas. As for the Pacific Division, the Los Angeles Kings take on San Jose as the current No. 3 seed in the West. If the playoffs started today the Hawks would take on the Kings in the first round of the playoffs. Chicago lost three of four to Los Angeles in the regular season.
