How it happened: The Blackhawks outscored the Coyotes 2-1 in four shootout rounds behind goals by Jonathan Toews and Brandon Pirri and were able pull out the two points. Chicago trailed 4-3 entering the third period but was able to get the game into overtime with a goal by Pirri three minutes into the frame. The Blackhawks took a 2-0 lead early in the first period behind goals by Brandon Saad and Patrick Sharp. The Coyotes answered with goals by Michael Stone and Shane Doan. The Blackhawks went back ahead 3-2 on a goal by Marian Hossa in the second period. The Coyotes fought back again and took a 4-3 lead following goals by Lauri Korpikoski and Stone. Blackhawks goaltender Corey Crawford made 26 saves.
What it means: The Blackhawks extended their winning streak to four games and are 7-0-1 in their past eight. They haven’t lost in regulation since Oct. 26 and improved to 13-2-4 on the season. Phoenix, meanwhile, had had the Blackhawks’ number in Chicago in the recent past but fell to 5-1-2 in the United Center in their most recent eight games. The Blackhawks have scored four or more goals in seven of their past eight games and have tallied 36 during that span.
Player of the game: The Blackhawks could have easily had several more goals if not for Phoenix goaltender Mike Smith. He made 48 saves on the night.
