DALLAS -- Right wing Kris Versteeg has made an immediate impact for the Chicago Blackhawks since being acquired in a trade with Florida on Nov. 14.

That doesn't come as a surprise to the Blackhawks' top brass, who believed Versteeg's experience and versatility made it worth picking up the reminder of the $4.7 million he is making this season.

Versteeg has four points in six games since being traded back to Chicago from Florida, but has zero points despite eight shots in his last three games. This will be Versteeg's second game against the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center this season, having played here in the season opener for the Panthers.

“I like him," Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said. "He’s a nice fit, first of all. But I think he’s been good. Offensively, he’s gotten a lot of good looks, makes lot of nice plays. Think he’s going to help our power play. I think he’s aware of our team game, and I think he gives you a lot of versatility with him on the left or the right. He can play with anybody.

"It gives you a lot of options and we like the skill level as well.”

Versteeg is in Friday night's lineup against Dallas on the third line with Brandon Pirri and Andrew Shaw.

Handzus works his way back: Center Michal Handzus played just over 12 minutes against Calgary on Wednesday night as he works his way back into shape after missing 14 games with an upper-body injury.

"I'm doing what they tell me now," Handzus said. "Making sure I have my conditioning back. I'll just be ready for my chances."

Andrew Shaw will play on the second line with Patrick Kane and Brandon Saad on Friday night against the Stars.
