Prospect Watch: Two vying for U.S. juniors

Here is a look at how some of the Chicago Blackhawks' prospects are doing:

Tyler Motte, forward, Michigan (NCAA)
Motte, a freshman, was one of two Blackhawks’ prospects to be named to the U.S. National Junior Team 26-play preliminary roster for the World Junior Championship on Wednesday. The roster will be cut to 23 players after an upcoming training camp. Motte has five goals and two assists in 13 games this season.

Ryan Hartman, forward, Plymouth Whalers (OHL)
Hartman was also named the U.S. National Junior Team preliminary roster. Hartman missed three more games last week due to an upper-body injury. He hasn’t played since Nov. 9. He has 10 goals and 11 assists in 20 games this season.

Kyle Beach, forward, Rockford IceHogs (AHL)
Beach, a 2008 first-round pick, had one of his finest games with the organization on Saturday. He scored three goals, including the game-winner, to defeat the Chicago Wolves 4-3 in Rockford. Beach has been a frequent healthy scratch for the IceHogs since returning from Sweden in October. He was even scratched against the Wolves on Friday. The three goals were the first three of his season. He’s played six games this season.

Kent Simpson, goaltender, Rockford IceHogs (AHL)
Simpson became the IceHogs’ No. 1 goaltender when Antti Raanta was recalled by the Blackhawks last month. Since Raanta left, Simpson has gone 3-2 with a 2.60 goals-against average and .903 save percentage. Of the 13 goals Simpson has allowed in the last five games, seven were at even strength.

Terry Broadhurst, forward, Rockford IceHogs (AHL)
Broadhurst accumulated three points in two games against the Wolves over the weekend. He scored the team’s lone goal on Friday and added two assists on Saturday. He has six goals and 10 assists on the season. He’s tied with his brother, Alex, for second on the team with 16 points.

Dillon Fournier, defenseman, Rouyn-Noranda Huskies (QMJHL)
Fournier had a goal and two assists in Rouyn-Noranda’s 5-3 win over the Saint John Sea Dogs on Saturday. He has nine goals, 14 assists and a plus-13 rating in 27 games this season.

Michael Paliotta, defenseman, Vermont (NCAA)
Paliotta, a senior, has been on a roll the last few weeks. He’s recorded points in the Catamounts’ last four games. He had a goal in Vermont’s 3-2 win over Maine on Friday and an assist in a 5-2 win over Maine on Saturday. He’s had five points in the last four games. He has one goal and five assists on the season.

Stephen Johns, defenseman, Notre Dame (NCAA)
Johns, a senior, had a goal in each of the Fighting Irish’s games over the weekend. He scored in Notre Dame’s 5-2 win over Alabama-Huntsville on Friday and in their 3-2 loss to Northeastern on Saturday. He has four goals and five assists on the season.

Kevin Hayes, forward, Boston College (NCAA)
Hayes, a senior, scored two goals and had an assist in Boston College’s 5-4 loss to Holy Cross on Friday. He has eight goals and 13 assists on the season and is second on the team with 21 points.

Matt Tomkins, goaltender, Ohio State (NCAA)
Tomkins, a freshman, hasn’t played for the Buckeyes since suffering a lower-body injury in the first period against Niagara on Nov. 9. He has a 2.76 goals-against average and .910 save percentage in nine games.
