Illini defeat West Virginia in scrimage

Illinois defeated West Virginia 47-26 in a scrimmage at the Aviano Air Base in Italy on Wednesday.

The two teams held a clinic for the troops’ children, participated in a dunk contest, scrimmaged against the Aviano varsity unit and then played two 10-minute halves against each other before about 500 military personnel and their families.

Illinois scored the first seven points against West Virginia and built a double-digit lead within the first three minutes. The Illini led 27-8 at halftime and went up by as many as 26 points in the second half.

Illinois shot 20 of 32 from the field and 5 of 8 from 3-pointer range. It had 15 assists on 20 baskets and caused 15 turnovers.

D.J. Richardson scored a team-high 11 points and connected on all five of his shots. Myke Henry (seven points) and Sam Maniscalco (six points, four assists) contributed in the win.

Illinois will play again on Thursday.
