California redshirt freshman guard Alex Rossi announced Wednesday he would transfer to Valparaiso, according to his former high school club coach.

Rossi, a 6-6 guard, medically redshirted his freshman season due to a lower abdominal injury. He played in three games during the 2011-2012 season. He said in April he was leaving California to be closer to his home in Winnetka, Ill.

“He really like Valparaiso coach Bryce Drew,” said Mike Weinstein, Rossi’s former club coach. “He likes the staff. He’s close to home. That’s why he came back to Chicago.

“He’s finally healthy. He’s been hurt for two years. I think he has some great basketball ahead of him.”

Weinstein said he expected Rossi to appeal to the NCAA to be eligible next season.

Rossi starred at New Trier High School in Illinois. He averaged 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists in his senior season. He was ranked the No. 36 shooting guard in the country in the Class of 2010 by ESPN.
