BOSTON -– Friday’s rainout will give left-hander Matt Thornton one more day to rest his injured elbow.
Thornton was was taken off the 15-day disabled list Friday where he had spent the last two weeks recovering from left elbow inflammation.
While gone, Chris Sale gained some major experience as a late-inning guy, even getting a ninth-inning save Wednesday at Cleveland. Thornton’s return now gives the bullpen two late-inning lefties.
With J.J. Putz on schedule to return next week from a sore knee, the bullpen is close to being at full strength for the first time since way back at the start of the second half, just before closer Bobby Jenks started to feel some back pain.
The relief corps has been the weakest part of the White Sox’s play during the second half, but especially in the last two weeks.
In other roster moves, infielder Brent Morel was called up from Triple-A Charlotte, where he was promoted earlier this season. Morel, 23, batted a combined .322 at two minor-league levels, with 37 doubles, 10 home runs and 64 RBIs in 130 games. He has no major-league experience.
To make room for Morel on the 40-man roster, left-hander Erick Threets was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. Threets has a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.
The current roster is at 30 players with Dayan Viciedo and Carlos Torre still expected to be recalled.
