BOSTON – Manny Ramirez met with the Boston media for the second time this season, and this time he was more contrite.
Now Ramirez is saying his shuffle out of Boston in 2008 was all his fault.
That’s right, in a single week, Ramirez has gone from wearing sunglasses during press conferences and speaking Spanish, to admitting that he has made some mistakes ... in English, by the way.
“I think everything was my fault but hey, you have to be a man and realize that when you do wrong,” Ramirez said Friday, not long after the game was postponed and rescheduled for Saturday afternoon. “Hey, it was my fault right? But I already passed that stage. I’m happy and with a new team. Like when I went to first [base] I told [Kevin] Youkilis [in a series with the Dodgers earlier this season], ‘Hey, what happened between you and me, I’m sorry. It’s my fault.’
“It takes a real man to go to somebody and say it was my fault and that’s what I did.”
Attempts to glean even more information about the subject weren’t as successful. Somebody asked Ramirez what he would have done differently.
“I don’t know,” Ramirez said. “It’s in the past and just leave it there. But maybe I would have been more relaxed and more patient.”
How Ramirez acts when he shows up to the ballpark on Saturday is anybody’s guess. On Tuesday it was Spanish-speaking Ramirez, by Wednesday he had returned to English and Friday it was full-responsibility Manny.
It addition to taking the blame for what happened in Boston, he said that he didn’t have any problem with the decision makers in Los Angeles either.
“I only played what 64, 65 games?” he said. “Hey, if I was a GM or an owner I would have done the same thing. I don’t blame them. I blame myself because I didn’t stay healthy. That’s the way I look at it.”
So what is he thinking about coming to Chicago next week to make his White Sox’s home debut? Well, his answers on that subject weren’t as interesting.
“Now I’m just taking it a day at a time and just trying to play the game right now,” Ramirez said. “I’m just worried about that.”
More specifically, he’s more worried about helping his new team to the postseason.
“Like I said, I am blessed to be in this situation,” he said. “I could have been in a worse situation. Now look at where I’m at. I’m on a team that is trying to be in the playoffs.”
