Here is what's happening on the Cincinnati Bengals beat:
- Defensive end Carlos Dunlap is ready to play in the regular-season opener despite not playing in the preseason due to a concussion, according to the team's official website. "This is real action," Dunlap said. "There is no blanks. You need to be ready and prepare like this is the season."
- When you include Geno Atkins' five-year, $55 million extension, the Bengals have retained 14 players either by re-signing or using the franchise tag (defensive end Michael Johnson), The Cincinnati Enquirer's Joe Reedy reports. The grand total of the 14 contracts is $181.075 million.
- Now that Atkins is signed beyond this season, the Bengals only have eight unrestricted free agents in 2014, with Johnson and safety Taylor Mays being the notable ones, according to The Cincinnati Enquirer.
- Atkins is the richest man in Bengals history, the team's official website reports. Head coach Marvin Lewis hopes the thrifty stereotype has been put to rest. "As far as I know, it's been blown up the last 11 years," Lewis said. "That's all I know. It's not fair and it's old news. The statute of limitations should have worn off."
