Maualuga, Newman back for Bengals

By Coley Harvey

CINCINNATI -- One day after being shelved with soreness picked up during Sunday's game at Detroit, Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Rey Maualuga and cornerback Terence Newman returned to practice Thursday, participating in limited capacity.

All signs seem to point to both playing this Sunday when the Bengals host the New York Jets at Paul Brown Stadium. Kickoff is at 4:05 p.m.

Both defensive players were held completely out of Wednesday's workouts as they tried to get over injuries that cropped up after last weeks' 27-24 victory over the Lions. Maualuga left late in the game with a hamstring injury and didn't return. Like Newman, who has been listed as having an ankle injury, Maualuga did not practice Wednesday. Both were limited in their returns Thursday.

While they came back, the Bengals still were down two other players listed on Wednesday's injury report. Receiver Marvin Jones, who also suffered a shoulder injury following a second-quarter touchdown reception, was held out of Thursday's session, working instead on his own conditioning drills. He was joined on the "Did Not Practice" portion of the injury report by running back Rex Burkhead, who had been limited the day before with a calf injury.

Also held out of practice was defensive end Wallace Gilberry, who suffered a knee injury last Sunday. He went through Wednesday's workout but was a no-go Thursday.

In addition to these five, cornerback Leon Hall and defensive tackle Devon Still were still listed as Out and will effectively miss this weekend's game. Hall is a likely candidate for injured reserve designation, although he has not yet been officially moved there. Against the Lions, he suffered what trainers reportedly believe is a season-ending Achilles tear.
