Plays that shaped a season: No. 2

The play: The onside kick against New England.

The situation: The Patriots had just scored a touchdown to cut a Browns lead to 26-21. With no timeouts, they had one option: Hope to recover the onside kick, which happens just short of 20 percent of the time.

The reason it mattered: It gave Tom Brady a chance to do what he does, and that’s somehow finagle his way into the end zone. Had the special teams simply recovered the kick, had Fozzy Whittaker somehow found a way to land on the ball, the Browns beat New England and the tenor of the rest of the season may change. Not to mention the job security of Rob Chudzinski.
