Plays that shaped a season: No. 1

By Pat McManamon

The play: Quarterback Brian Hoyer scrambles against Buffalo and is hit by Kiko Alonso as his cleat catches in the turf.

The situation: Hoyer had started the previous two games and given the Browns hope by winning both. His third start against Buffalo lasted 3:27.

The reason it mattered: Hoyer tore the ACL in his knee on the play, which ended his season and wiped out optimism in Cleveland. The Browns returned to Brandon Weeden, who struggled before he was replaced by Jason Campbell, who also struggled. Hoyer only played two games, but he played them so well folks were actually starting to believe again. The team and the fired coaching staff and the fans can only wonder what would have happened had he stayed healthy all season.
