Arizona produces unlikely NFL draft pick

4/26/2010

Fendi Onobun averaged 1.8 points per game while playing sparingly as a forward in four years of basketball with Arizona.

After graduating, he walked on to play football for one season for his hometown school, Houston, where he caught two passes.

Sunday, Onobun became a St. Louis Ram after being selected with the first pick of the sixth round in the NFL draft. The 6-foot-6, 249-pounder will get a shot to be a tight end as a professional.

Some Rams fans were outraged by the pick, but the team liked his 4.48 40-yard dash time and 37 1/2-inch vertical that he once displayed for Lute Olson.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

Perhaps someday Onobun could give them a dimension sorely lacking last season. Perhaps he could become a poor man’s Antonio Gates or Tony Gonzalez.

“That’s the goal,” he said during his conference call with reporters Saturday. “Those guys kind of paved the way for guys like myself making the conversion over from basketball to football. I’ve watched a lot of film on those guys. They’re great tight ends.

“I’m just excited to start my path and hopefully have an opportunity to where a couple years down the road somebody says, ‘Who’s the next Fendi Onobun?’”
