ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Country music star Toby Keith loves Oklahoma athletics.
That’s why the Sooners supporter walked into the Honda Center on Saturday afternoon with pregame jitters. Keith said he’s excited for his favorite squad but also worried before Oklahoma’s matchup against Oregon in the Elite Eight.
“You know Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, North Carolina are going to be back here,” Keith told ESPN.com. “But we’re a football school, so when our basketball team gets to show up and have a shot at the Final Four like our football team, it’s great for the whole program. We’ve got a great coach. Love Coach Lon [Kruger]. He’s really brought us a long way. Been nervous all morning.”
Keith said he’s excited to watch the game and confident in Buddy Hield, the Wooden Award favorite who has led Oklahoma men’s basketball on this wild ride.
“Well, Coach just gets these four-year guys and keeps them around and makes them better,” Keith said. “And every one of these kids get better every year. Now you’ve got a player of the year kinda guy that’ll lead you. He’s a great kid, too. That’s part of it. He gets standing ovations from the other team. I’ve never seen anything like that happen. He’s a great kid. Deserves everything he’s got.”
