ASU recruit wants to push the pace

We've spent a little time discussing Arizona State coach Herb Sendek's sloth-like pace tendencies this offseason. Essentially, the Sun Devils are unhappy about that reputation, because they've heard far too many stories about opposing recruiters using it against them, and that really grinds their gears. Some of that outrage is misplaced. Nefarious recruiting tactics or no, Sendek-coached teams have typically been slow; a look at his pace numbers at ASU and North Carolina State confirm as much.

This isn't a bad thing. Plenty of teams can win at a slower pace, and ASU has plenty of recruiting positives to counteract whatever negative implication comes with Sendek's purported style.

Now they also have this: Jahii Carson, an in-state point guard product from Mesa, Ariz., committed to the Sun Devils this week. And Carson wants to push the pace:
"I'm pretty excited," Carson said. "I wanted to stay home for the most part. I have a fair chance to be the starting point guard, coming to Arizona State."

"[Coach Sendek] said he's never had a point guard who could play up-tempo," Carson said. "The guys said Coach Sendek is a man of his word, and they tell me he's going to run a more up-tempo offense."

If ever there was an opportunity to get out and run, Carson's commitment is it. The No. 10 ranked point guard in the country, Carson is described by ESPN's recruiting experts as "electrifying" with an "extraordinary level of quickness and explosion." Sendek clearly wants to run, if only to prove to players that his style is malleable. He can begin that process in 2010-11, and continue it when Carson arrives in 2011-12.

And if a recruit or AAU runner or assistant coach asks him again, he'll be able to say, "See? We do play fast." That's a recruiting tool most coaches would love to have.
