Memphis coach Josh Pastner spent a Saturday morning attending the annual 9/11 memorial service at the Fire Museum of Memphis and took his team along with him.
The Tigers players were young when the attacks took place nine years ago. Junior Wesley Witherspoon remembers that day in sixth grade well, but soon enough, students entering college will have no recollection of what occurred in 2001.
So Pastner wanted to make sure his players took the time to remember.
From The Commercial Appeal:
"This is good for our guys," Pastner said. "The players are role models. Not heroes. The men and women in uniform are heroes."
Many of the men and women in uniform Saturday morning shook hands with Tigers players and coaches and expressed their appreciation for their presence at the service. Afterward, the entire team posed for pictures in front of Fire Engine House No. 1.
"If you think about another 10 years from now, you want people to remember," Pastner said. "That's why it's so important that we never forget."
