Texas A&M-Corpus Christi officials are holding off on previous plans to debut a new-look Izzy the Islander by the Nov. 15 men's basketball home game against Texas A&M, citing a need to provide additional opportunity for public input in the redesign of the mascot.

The school will schedule town hall-style discussions throughout October and November due to recent opinions expressed in the community following an announcement that the mascot would transform from a caricature of a Polynesian island warrior to a humanized South Texas surfer.

Among the opinions? Cassandra Rodriguez, the current student playing Izzy the Islander, had told the Corpus Christi Caller-Times that she was unsure a makeover was needed.

"We are elated that there have been diverse opinions expressed regarding this project, because it shows clearly that our campus community and friends of the University are engaged in the spirit of the campus," university president Flavius Killebrew said in a statement. "While it is important that we freshen the look of our mascot, it is equally meaningful that we redevelop a character that engages everyone."

So while the Islanders return four starters coming off a 17-win season, the great debate continues over the look of their mascot.
