Lon Kruger is courting Oklahoma fans

New Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger wants to energize the fan base and has been trying everything from emailing with fans to visiting with fraternities and sororities.

When the school asked their fans last month to email their thoughts on the program to Kruger at coachkruger@ou.edu, the response it generated was encouraging.

"The fan reaction has been incredible and our staff and players are very appreciative of the support," Kruger said in a statement announcing he would now be taking the conversation to his Twitter page. "We have received more than 600 emails and we continue to read every message. Many of them include valuable feedback that will help us improve our program, which was the goal of this public endeavor.

"One of the reasons we've decided to shift our collection of fan feedback to Twitter is because we believe it will allow us to be more conversational with our supporters."

The former UNLV coach has made the rounds as well, throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at a softball game and attending a Western-themed barbecue to meet with the school's international students. On campus, he has also taken the time to visit with the Greek community.

From The Oklahoman:

Kruger informed fraternity and sorority leaders that no idea is too small. Proposals ranged from running shuttles to and from Lloyd Noble Center on game nights to reducing the $140 student season ticket in half.

Additional suggestions included moving the student sections closer to the court and hosting a "Midnight Madness" event in McCasland Field House when practice opens in mid-October.

"We can do anything. When you’re new and you haven't lost a game yet, you have a little more freedom," Kruger said, laughing.
