The outstanding beard that used to dominate Saint Mary's guard Matthew Dellavedova's face is no more. Gone is the goatee of top returning scorer Rob Jones.

In fact, the entire Saint Mary's team, including coaches, shaved off all their facial hair in a group shaving session Monday, but it was all done in preparation for growing out mustaches in support of the "Movember" initiative to raise cancer awareness.

"We thought it would be a great idea to support this worthy cause and have a good time doing it," Dellavedova said in a statement. "Our team is hoping the Saint Mary's community supports this effort and joins us in growing mustaches during the month to support research for prostate cancer and other male cancers."

If mustaches start appearing in the crowd at McKeon Pavilion during the early part of the schedule, the community will have Dellavedova and forward Mitchell Young to thank. The two Australians recently approached athletic department officials with the idea of supporting the Movember initiative, which first began in Australia.

Some athletic department officials are growing mustaches, and even the baseball team is getting in on it.

"Certainly, we were motivated by the efforts of the basketball team and we plan to support Movember," baseball coach Jedd Soto said in a statement. "It sounds like a fun way to bring awareness to a worthy cause and to bring the community together."

As if Saint Mary's wasn't already a scary enough opponent with its past success as a giant killer, now the Gaels with be wearing mustaches.
