I used to have an AP vote when I worked for newspapers for nine years prior to arriving at ESPN. I haven’t had one in the decade I’ve been at ESPN.com.
But that doesn’t mean I’ll ever keep quiet on the subject.
With voters -- coaches and members of the media -- figuring out how to put together their poll after Sunday night’s games, I offer this advice:
All three should be in both polls. Texas Tech was No. 23 in the AP, but wasn’t in the coaches’ last week.
Vanderbilt wasn’t in the AP but did crack the coaches’ poll at No. 24 last week. No more. The Commodores should be bounced after losing twice this week at Illinois and to Western Kentucky in Nashville.
Say goodbye to Washington and the Pac-10 this week. The Huskies lost to Georgetown on a neutral court in Anaheim. That’s not a bad loss one bit, but the Huskies haven’t done anything yet to prove they should be ranked. So it doesn’t matter the Huskies were No. 16 in the coaches and No. 17 in the AP. Bye-bye.
No offense to UNLV but I don’t mind removing the Runnin’ Rebels after just one loss -- to Kansas State in its city. The wins over Arizona and Louisville don’t look as good right now since both teams continued to lose after playing Vegas. Someone has to go to get Kansas State in the poll and why not UNLV since the Wildcats just beat the Rebels.
And if I have to get rid of one more in the AP or coaches’ poll you can take out Butler or Ohio State for now. The Bulldogs did lose to Georgetown and beat an Ohio State Evan Turner-less team. I’d lean more toward Ohio State at this juncture since the Buckeyes aren’t the same team without Turner. It’s a tough call, but someone has to go to get the Lobos in the poll.
In the top 12, based on what I’ve seen:

- Put in New Mexico after the Lobos won at San Diego and then took down Texas A&M in Houston.
- Put in Texas Tech after the Red Raiders stayed undefeated with a road win at TCU.
- Put in Kansas State after the Wildcats beat Xavier and won in Las Vegas against UNLV.
