North Carolina reserve guard P.J. Hairston, who has been suffering from a sore foot, is wearing a walking boot, a team spokesman confirmed Friday morning.
The school hopes to have an update later Friday on his status for Saturday's game against Virginia.
Hairston has been struggling with his shot, going only 10-for-46 in ACC play -- including 0-for-3 in 10 minutes during UNC's loss to Duke on Wednesday.
"It's hard when I'm missing,'' Hairston said Tuesday. "But I've talked to the coaches about it, and basically they just keep telling me, 'Keep shooting. It's going to start going in.' So I haven't really lost confidence; every time I shoot it, I think it's going in. As long as they're good shots, they don't mind me missing them. And I feel better about myself, as long as it's good shots -- not bad shots."
If Hairston can't play, or is limited against the No. 20 Cavaliers, it would further hurt the fifth-ranked Tar Heels' perimeter depth. They've already lost starting shooting guard Dexter Strickland for the season because of a knee injury. And UNC's bench has contributed only 15 total points over its past three games.
