Steve Alford violated a conference sportsmanship rule, the Mountain West Conference announced in its public reprimand of the New Mexico coach for his words for BYU's Jonathan Tavernari after Saturday's game.
Alford said earlier Monday that he apologized to BYU coach Dave Rose and did not deserve a reprimand.
"I would think not because I wouldn’t think it would be warranted," Alford said.
