North Carolina coach Roy Williams was scheduled to have a biopsy on his left kidney Wednesday, a team spokesman said. It’s unknown when the results will be in.

A tumor removed from the Hall of Fame coach’s right kidney during a 3 -hour surgery on Sept. 19 was benign, the school said last week. If the results from Wednesday’s procedure show same type of tumor -- a non-cancerous oncocytoma -- a second surgery would not be needed.

Williams, 62, is set to begin his 10th season with the Tar Heels, whom he has coached to two national titles. He has experienced a few medical issues -- vertigo, shoulder surgery, back spasms -- during his tenure in Chapel Hill, but he never has missed a game.

He is expected to be back on the court when UNC opens preseason practice Oct. 13. If another surgery is required after Wednesday’s biopsy, his doctor has said Williams could miss some practice time, but likely not any games.
