Joel Berry, a 6-foot point guard ranked as ESPN’s No. 12 prospect in the Class of 2014, committed to North Carolina on Monday, both the Orlando Sentinel and Inside Carolina reported.
According to Sentinel reporter Buddy Collins, Berry orally committed after visiting Chapel Hill over the weekend:
He called Tar Heels coach Roy Williams before a Martin Luther King Day holiday practice at Lake Highland Prep to tell him he had talked his decision over with his parents and high school coaches and had seen all he needs to see in the recruiting process.
“I told everybody North Carolina was my dream school all during my recruiting process,” Berry said in a phone interview with the Sentinel on Monday. “Now I get to fulfill my dream.”
Berry, who last season became the first sophomore to be named Florida Mr. Basketball, also had scholarship offers from Kansas, Ohio State, N.C. State, Florida and Florida State.
He is currently rated the No. 3 point guard in his class by ESPN.
