NCAA tournament tidbits

MIDWEST REGION

The Memphis Tigers are 0-3 this season against teams ranked in the BPI top 50, losing each game by at least nine points. The Tigers haven't faced one of those teams since December. Middle Tennessee and Saint Mary's both rank in the BPI top 50. Saint Mary's is 1-3 against the BPI top 50, while Middle Tennessee is 1-2.

Michigan State Spartans head coach Tom Izzo is 9-0 all-time as a top-5 seed in the Round of 64. The Spartans have reached at least the Sweet 16 in each of those 9 NCAA tournaments.

The Cincinnati Bearcats have lost five straight against teams ranked in the BPI top 25. Creighton and Duke are both ranked in the BPI top 25.

WEST REGION

The Gonzaga Bulldogs are making their 15th straight NCAA tournament appearance, but they haven’t made it past the Sweet 16 since 1999.

The Wichita State Shockers have been outrebounded only three times this season. The Shockers are 1-2 in those games (split with Indiana State, lost to Creighton).

Nearly 40 percent of the Wisconsin Badgers' field goal attempts this season are 3-pointers. The Badgers are 7-0 when they shoot at least 40 percent on 3-pointers.

Ole Miss' Marshall Henderson is second in the country with 131 made 3-pointers this season. Wisconsin only allows 3.9 made 3-pointers per game, sixth fewest in the country. The Badgers hold opponents to 29.2 percent 3-point shooting, 11th best in the country.

Arizona Wildcats head coach Sean Miller has won four straight Round of 64 games. He hasn't lost a Round of 64 game since his first NCAA tournament appearance in 2006 with Xavier. Miller has reached at least the Sweet 16 in each of his last three appearances.

New Mexico Lobos head coach Steve Alford hasn't made it past the Round of 32 since 1999, when he made it to the Sweet 16 (the furthest he's ever gone) with Southwest Missouri State.

SOUTH REGION

The North Carolina Tar Heels are 0-7 against teams ranked in the BPI top 20. Five of the seven losses were by at least eight points.

VCU is 26-1 this season when forcing at least 15 turnovers. The Rams are 0-7 when they force fewer than 15 turnovers.

Minnesota is 1-9 when it attempts 20 or fewer free throws. The Gophers are 19-3 when they have more than 20 free throw attempts. UCLA has allowed 20 or fewer free throw attempts in 13 of its last 15 games.

Florida was outrebounded in six of its seven losses this season (Arizona was the exception).

EAST REGION

Temple Owls head coach Fran Dunphy is 1-12 in his last 13 NCAA tournament games, including 1-5 at Temple.

The Indiana Hoosiers are 24-1 this season in games with at least 64 possessions, with the lone loss coming in overtime to Butler. Twenty-eight of NC State’s 34 games have been played with 64 or more possessions.

The Syracuse Orange play zone on 92.4 percent of their defensive possessions and hold opponents to 34.8 percent shooting against their zone. The Montana Grizzlies shot 42.7 percent against zone defenses this season.

Butler-Bucknell should be a half-court game. Bucknell averages 4.8 transition points per game, second fewest in the country, and allows six transition points per game, the fewest in the country. Butler averages 6.2 and allows nine transition points per game.
