UCLA hires Tyus Edney onto staff

By Diamond Leung

Former UCLA guard Tyus Edney, famous for his length-of-the-court drive and buzzer-beating shot in the Bruins' run to the 1995 NCAA tournament championship, is back in the program as the new director of basketball operations, the school announced today.

"I'm really excited because this is something that I've always wanted to do," Edney said in a statement. "I'm very fortunate to be ending my pro career now with this opportunity presenting itself. I'm thankful that Coach [Ben] Howland gave me this opportunity and has the confidence that I can bring something new and exciting to this great program."

Edney, 37, has of late been looking into getting into college coaching and meeting with college coaches like Howland to get his start after finishing his professional playing career.

"He's a Bruin through and through having graduated from UCLA and brings a wealth of knowledge and energy to the program," Howland said in a statement. "I feel our student-athletes will benefit greatly from dealing with Tyus on a daily basis because he has experienced the things they will experience here at UCLA."
