Tom Izzo to take the wheel at NASCAR race
By Diamond Leung
Before embarking on the road back to the Final Four, Michigan State coach Tom Izzo will serve as the honorary pace car driver for the CARFAX 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Aug. 15 at Michigan International Speedway.
"It's unlike anything I've ever done before and I'm certain it will be quite a rush," Izzo said in a statement. "More importantly, I'm honored to help support another great event in the state of Michigan. Michigan International Speedway is an asset to the state's economy and exposure.
"I'm looking forward to being a small part of the action and interacting with some of the drivers. I've heard that a lot of them are college basketball fans, but I'm curious to see what it is that makes them the best of the best in their profession."
Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim has joked that he'd probably crash on the first turn driving a race car, so let's hope the pace car -- in this case a 2011 Ford Fiesta -- handles a lot better for a college basketball coach.
