Head coach Steve Alford, associate head coach Craig Neal, assistant coach Wyking Jones and all got their licks in, with Alford doubling back to go at Tavernari as he shook players' hands in front of the scorer's table.
It was obviously a two-way street, and my vantage point gave me only a good look at what the coaches were saying to JT, and not the other way around. Clearly, Tavernari felt he was enough at fault to visit the UNM locker room and apologize to Alford.
However, since there is video of the confrontation and of Alford calling Tavernari an obscenity, I would not be surprised if Alford is issued a conference reprimand, at the very least. I don't care what the situation is, coaches need to avoid confrontations with players, not prolong them. Alford is a competitive and fiery guy, but as a head coach, his actions and those of his assistants were out of line.
