50 in 50 rankings: No. 46 UTEP

By Staff

Editor's note: Using a point system devised by the ESPN Stats & Information department, ESPN.com is counting down the 50 most successful programs of the past 50 years. A running list of the top 50 can be found here. For an explanation of the scoring system, read our intro.

46. UTEP (187 points)

Positives: The Miners won the 1966 national championship when they were known as Texas Western. Late coach Don Haskins led the school to 14 NCAA tournament appearances in his 38 seasons (1961 to 1999), including seven straight from 1984 to 1990.

Negatives: Only 12 total points in the past 20 seasons under our scoring system (T-138th during that span). Accumulated a total of minus-19 points from 1996 to 2003, which ranked below 325 teams.

Fun fact: The 1966 national-title team had no first- or second-team All-Americans. In fact, UTEP doesn't have any first- or second-team All-Americans in the past 50 seasons.
