Rutgers basketball coach Mike Rice has been suspended three games without pay and fined $50,000 for a violation of athletic department policy, the school announced Thursday.

The suspension is related to inappropriate behavior and language, and does not involve any NCAA violations.

"Accountability is a vital element of the Rutgers athletics family and it is imperative our head coaches act and lead in a responsible manner," athletic director Tim Pernetti said in a statement released by the school. "This was not an easy decision for me to make but absolutely necessary to ensure what is best for our program."

Rutgers coach Mike Rice was suspended three games and fined $50,000 for a violation of athletic policy.
On a conference call with reporters, Pernetti indicated Rice's transgressions occurred during practice and involved players, but declined to go into further detail.
