Indiana guard Maurice Creek injured again

By Eamonn Brennan

On Wednesday afternoon, Indiana University announced guard Maurice Creek had suffered yet another injury, his fourth in four years in Bloomington. This time it's a right foot injury, and IU said Creek will be out "indefinitely." Their release:

Indiana University guard Maurice Creek will be out indefinitely after suffering an injury to his right foot Sunday in practice. Through 10 games, he is averaging 3.0 points and 1.6 rebounds.

“Maurice has been doing so much to improve and help our team,” said IU Coach Tom Crean. “Hopefully this is just a temporary setback.”

That doesn't sound devastating, and Creek has since tweeted some seemingly positive news:
I appreciate the love #HoosierNation, this is not the end of my season...I will be back

So it sounds like Creek won't miss the rest of the season, at least as far he's concerned. That is good. Why? Because there is no more star-crossed player in college basketball than the guard from Maryland.

As a freshman, Creek was averaging 19 points per game (he put up 31 on the John Wall-led Kentucky Wildcats) and leading his team in scoring when he suffered a gruesome patella injury in his right knee. As a sophomore, he suffered a stress fracture in his left patella. As a junior — this is where things get really ridiculous — Creak slipped on some slick porch steps and tore his Achilles tendon. Three seasons, 22 months, three significant lower-body surgeries. I mean, what are the odds?

Creek redshirted last season and returned this year. He isn't getting starters' minutes, and he still isn't back to where he was as a freshman, at least athletically. But he is making a real go of his comeback, providing solid guard depth along the way, and it would be absolutely devastating to hear of another serious injury this season. Early signs indicate that is not the case. Phew.

Because I don't care what team you root for. You should be rooting for Maurice Creek.
