Vanderbilt put its best foot forward for the many prospects visiting this weekend. Todd Kelly Jr. noticed as much.
"It was great!" the safety prospect from Knoxville (Tenn.) Webb stated via text message about his visit.
The Commodores have made Kelly Jr. a high priority since he figures to be one of the top prospects in Tennessee for the 2014 class. The overall feel of Vandy's program was a highlight for Kelly Jr.
"The coaching staff and players have a strong connection and it feels like they are a family," he said.
Vanderbilt beat Tennessee 41-18 on Saturday. The Vols fell to 4-7 and 0-7 in the SEC.
"It shows how much Coach Franklin has changed the football program at Vandy," Kelly Jr. said of the Dores' win.
The loss and losing record led to head coach Derek Dooley's firing on Sunday. When asked of the change, Kelly Jr. said, "It is what it is, they are doing what they feel is the best move for their football team."
Kelly Jr. is a key target for Tennessee, which certainly has a strong connection to the family. His father, Todd Kelly, was a standout defensive end for Tennessee in the early 1990's.
"No one can see the future," Kelly Jr. said when asked how quickly Tennessee could turn things around. "They haven't even determined the new head coach for next season. With that being said, it's hard to predict when the Vols will be able to start winning SEC games again.”
Kelly Jr. will visit Alabama this weekend for the Auburn game. His sister is a sophomore cheerleader for the Crimson Tide.
