Top prospects countdown - No. 3

5/22/2012

There are six or seven spots left in Florida's 2013 class and a few needs to fill. Some of the top prospects in the nation are considering the Gators, and it would be difficult to turn them away. So GatorNation is ranking the top 12 uncommitted prospects for Florida this week, two-a-day. We’ll also add comments by some of our Insider subscribers from The Chompions Club premium message board.

No. 3

Derek Tyson's pick: QB Ryan Buchanan (Jackson, Miss./Jackson Prep)

Buchanan has quickly moved to the top of Florida's quarterback wish list. With Cooper Bateman (Alabama), Cody Thomas (Oklahoma) and Kevin Olsen (Miami) all making commitments recently, the quarterback pool is slowly dwindling.

The Gators have certainly turned up the heat on Buchanan. Florida offensive coordinator Brent Pease and wide receivers coach Aubrey Hill have visited Buchanan in the last few weeks. Buchanan impressed Pease enough to earn a Florida offer. The Gators look to be in good shape here, but don't count out Ole Miss. Buchanan has ties to the Rebels, but how much that will affect him remains to be seen.

Jeff Barlis’ pick: DE Demarcus Walker (Jacksonville, Fla./Sandalwood)

This is more of a want than a need pick, as Walker has expressed strong interest in joining his Jacksonville friends -- WR Ahmad Fulwood, DB Nick Washington and LB Daniel McMillian -- in Florida's class of 2013. But there is certainly a significant need for the Gators to add another terrific strong-side defensive end prospect to follow the 2012 signing of Jonathan Bullard. UF still badly needs play-makers on its defensive line, and Walker brings an all-around game that would lend itself to early playing time. An enormous human being at 6-foot-4 and 276 pounds, Walker has tremendous raw strength that allows him to overpower high school opponents. He will need to refine his technique, specifically on the pass-rush, at the next level, but Walker could give Florida a sweep of Jacksonville's finest.

Readers’ pick: WR Stacy Coley (Oakland Park, Fla./Northeast)

scooterp518663 - Would be THE cornerstone to what maybe the strongest WR class we've had in 5 years.

secrocks2000 - The lack of offense weapons is blatant, and Coley has a special talent in a position of need. The WR class is good right now with Ahmad Fulwood and Rodney Adams, but Coley would make the WR class great.

chris smith 24 - Probably the most talented WR on the board, but not sure about the grades.

RussianTurtles - Decent size and good speed, and would just add a weapon to what could be a scary-good offense in a few seasons.

kendallland1 - Playmaker could step in right away and contribute.

dukeoden - Hope his grades work out. Big-time guy with speed and hands. Would be great to get him.
