Junior 300 Thompson names top five
By Gerry Hamilton
ALBANY, Ga. -- The recruitment of defensive tackle Trenton Thompson continues to take shape. The No. 5-ranked prospect in the ESPN Junior 300 has been sitting on offers from nearly every top program in the nation for over a year now, and while once thought to be an early pledge for home-state Georgia, his recruitment has slowed down a bit with the rush of the spring evaluation period around the corner.
While the Bulldogs remain the team to beat at this point, there is stiff competition coming from the region's best. On Wednesday, the 6-foot-3, 311-pound Thompson gave the latest, which includes his top five.
“Well, my five right now are Georgia, Alabama, Auburn, Florida State and Tennessee,” Thompson said. “Those are the schools I have visited that I like most right now. When I go to USC, Louisville and other places, I may like other schools and my top five may change.”
Trenton Thompson took a break from spring training to discuss his leaderboard.
After coming away impressed with unofficial visits to Alabama and Auburn in recent weeks, early favorite Georgia will receive another chance to strengthen its relationship with the Thompson family.
“I’m going to Georgia this weekend. We are going Friday and coming back home Sunday," Thompson said. "They want me to come up and see a practice and show me the academic facilities. I love it up there, and my mom does too. She is taking me this weekend.”
Thompson added that he is not planning to commit in the coming weeks. With spring practice just a few weeks away, Thompson is focused on a key area he feels like he can improve as a senior.
“I’m working on my speed. I’m doing 30-second sprints right now," said Thompson. "I’m trying to build my endurance so I can go 100 percent on every play.”
Thompson is planning to visit Clemson and Georgia Tech the first week of April.
In his words Thompson's thoughts on his top five:
Georgia: First school that offered. The first school that really showed me some love. The first school that really came out here and watched practice, watched us in the weight room and showed love. Coach Mark Richt came by -- that was a big shock.
Alabama: Coach Nick Saban came by the school with coach Kirby Smart. They were taking pictures with everybody and stuff. I really like Bama -- [it is] really the closest thing to the NFL right now.
Auburn: I always have a great time at Auburn. I like Coach “E” [Ellis Johnson], and coach [Gus] Malzahn is a great head coach.
Florida State: Florida State was my second offer. Coach Odell [Haggins] has 20 years in the game. I like him a lot. Coach [Jimbo] Fisher put them back on the map. I like Coach Sal [Sunseri] a lot too. He’s funny ... I like talking to him.
Tennessee: Coach [John] Jancek -- I like his personality. Coach Butch Jones [will have] Tennessee on the rise.
