RB Thomas talks recruiting, new offer

By Greg Ostendorf

HUEYTOWN, Ala. -- College coaches from across the country came to see ESPN 150 running back Racean Thomas (Oxford, Ala./Oxford) this spring, but it was the usual suspects -- Alabama and Auburn -- who were in attendance for his spring game on Saturday night.

The Alabama native didn’t disappoint. In two quarters of action, Thomas rushed seven times for 124 yards and two touchdowns. He took his first carry 73 yards for a score.

With that type of performance, it’s no surprise that new schools continue to enter the mix.

On Friday, the 5-foot-10, 202-pound back picked up a new scholarship offer from Texas.

“It’s a good offer,” Thomas said. “They came all the way down from Texas to recruit me and let me know that I had an offer, so that’s a school that I’ll be looking at. I don’t really know much about Texas, but I’m willing to learn. I’ll just try to see what they run offense-wise, try to see what they do with their guys.”

Oregon was another school that piqued Thomas' interest when it offered in March. The Ducks sent a coach to his school this spring, and Thomas says he plans to visit the Eugene, Ore., campus this summer when he heads out West for The Opening.

“The offense, it’s fast-paced,” he said. “They go, they go, they go. Talking to coach on the phone about how they practice, I think I’d fit good in that practice. The uniforms, too, that’s great. Really, they got great tradition. They started the whole uniform thing.”

Despite all the new interest, Thomas hasn’t forgotten about the two in-state schools. He’s visiting Auburn today with his parents, and he plans to return to Alabama in two weeks for the Crimson Tide’s camp. He doesn’t expect to participate in the camp, just visit.

“I’m trying to get my mom down to [Auburn], because she hasn’t been down there yet,” Thomas said. “I’m trying to get her in the mix and let her know what they’re trying to do with me.

“Bama, that’s a great school. My parents feel good about that school. They feel good about both schools. It’s really up to them and to me to decide.”

Florida State and LSU also checked in on the ESPN 150 star this spring, and he’d like to visit Tallahassee, Fla., this summer with his teammate, Desmon Owens, who’s expected to camp with the Seminoles.

At the end of spring practice, Thomas has one goal for his Oxford team.

“I want to try to lead my team to a state championship,” he said. “They deserve it. I deserve it. It’s a big thing for us.”
