ESPN 300 targets: Florida State

By Corey Dowlar

With the release of the ESPN 300 rankings on Monday, NoleNation takes a look at some targets the Seminoles could be in position to land.

1. ATH Myles Autry (Norcross, Ga./Norcross)
6-foot, 175 pounds
ESPN 300 rank: 256

Myles Autry
Athlete Myles Autry has the speed and explosiveness the Seminoles crave.
Why they want him: The nation's No. 256 player overall has plenty of speed to burn, something Jimbo Fisher never turns down. He's coming off an injury, but if he recovers as he should and has a productive senior season, he could rise up the rankings. Autry could be used in a variety of ways, including at receiver and out of the backfield.

Who else wants him: Autry has offers from all around the country including most teams from the Southeast.

Odds they get him: High

2. OG Corey Martinez (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Catholic)
6-foot-4, 297 pounds
ESPN 300 rank: 274

Why they want him: The country's No. 274 player hails from inside the state of Florida and happens to play a position of need for the Seminoles. Lawrence Dawsey and Rick Trickett have done a good job of recruiting Martinez and have put themselves out front, with Miami definitely still in the picture. Will the Seminoles be able to close the deal?

Who else wants him: Georgia, Miami, Notre Dame, Tennnessee.

Odds they get him: High

3. DE Jalyn Holmes (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor)
6-foot-5, 220 pounds
ESPN 300 rank: 293

Why they want him: Though he's listed as a tight end, Florida State wants Holmes, a two-way player, as a dynamic defensive end off the edge. He's the nation's No. 293 player and a four-star prospect. He also has a good relationship with Florida State commitment Alec Eberle.

Who else wants him: Clemson, Ohio State

Odds they get him: High

4. OT Roderick Johnson (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood)
6-foot-6, 320 pounds
ESPN 300 rank: 139

Why they want him: Six-foot-6 offensive tackles with athleticism don't grow on trees. So it is easy to see why Florida State has made Johnson a priority. He'll be visiting the Seminoles soon, but can they convince the nation's No. 139 player to commit while he's on campus?

Who else wants him: Alabama, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio State, Oklahoma.

Odds they get him: Medium to high

5. RB Derrell Scott (Havelock, N.C./Havelock)
5-foot-11, 183 pounds
ESPN 300 rank: 168

Why they want him: Scott might be the top name on the board for Florida State at running back. He visited Tallahassee over the weekend but did not participate in the camp. He's the country's No. 168 prospect and is considering a couple other schools.

Who else wants him: Ohio State, South Carolina

Odds they get him: Medium

6. S Cortez McDowell (Locust Grove, Ga./Locust Grove)
6-foot-1, 200 pounds
ESPN 300 rank: 221

Why they want him: The four-star safety from Georgia is fresh off a visit to Florida State. Before the visit, Auburn and Tennessee might have been in the lead. But now the No. 221 player overall has the Seminoles trending up. It is unclear whether or not they are in front, but they are near the top.

Who else wants him: Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia

Odds they get him: Medium

7. OT Damian Prince (Forestville, Md./Bishop McNamara)
6-foot-5, 286 pounds
ESPN 300 rank: 18

Why they want him: Prince recently got a bump up in the rankings to No. 18 overall in the latest ESPN 300 release. Florida State continues to battle Maryland, Alabama and Ohio State for his attention, but for right now, it has it. It's going to be interesting how it develops down the stretch, but it would be a surprise if FSU wasn't in the final group.

Who else wants him: Alabama, Ohio State and Maryland

Odds they get him: Medium

8. WR Artavis Scott (Tarpon Springs, Fla./East Lake)
5-foot-11, 177 pounds
ESPN 300 rank: 89

Why they want him: The 10th-best wide receiver in the class, Scott, like Martinez, hails from Florida in an area where Dawsey recruits. Scott was once thought to be headed out of state, Michigan in particular. Notre Dame, another team in the mix, is still a factor. But Florida, Florida State and Miami are beginning to emerge, too.

Who else wants him: Florida, Miami, Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame

Odds they get him: Low to medium

9. DE Lorenzo Carter (Norcross, Ga./Norcross)
6-foot-5, 228 pounds
ESPN 300 rank: 10

Why they want him: A teammate of Myles Autry, Carter was on campus Saturday to visit the Seminoles. The newly crowned five-star defensive end has a genuine interest in the Seminoles, but they lag behind Alabama and Georgia. At the moment, the Crimson Tide hold the edge.

Who else wants him: Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Auburn

Odds they get him: Low

10. OT David Sharpe (Jacksonville, Fla./Providence School)
6-foot-6, 288 pounds
ESPN 300 rank: 14

Why they want him: The highest ranked recruit from the state and the nation's No. 14 player, Sharp is interested in the Seminoles. But in-state rival Florida holds a clear lead for him. Can the Seminoles overturn the Gators, or will they try to go another route?

Who else wants him: Florida

Odds they get him: Low
