More than a dozen high schools were on the intramural fields at the University of Georgia two weeks ago, with several rising junior and senior BCS-caliber prospects competing in 7-on-7s and linemen competition in hopes of earning an offer from the Bulldogs. In the end, a rising sophomore impressed the coaching staff enough to garner a scholarship offer to play for Georgia.
Terry Godwin (Hoganville, Ga./Callaway) started on both sides of the ball as a freshman last year for head coach Pete Wiggins, and the 5-foot-11, 175-pound athlete made 46 tackles and three interceptions at cornerback, and 10 catches for 119 yards and four touchdowns at receiver. After impressing the Alabama coaches a week earlier with his footwork and versatility, Godwin put on a show in Athens, making double-digit touchdown catches and interceptions. UGA receivers coach Tony Ball made sure to call over several coaches early in the day to watch, including head coach Mark Richt.
“It was great to know UGA took the time to watch an upcoming sophomore amongst juniors and seniors,” Godwin said. “I felt I performed OK, although I could have run better routes.”
