OU still waiting for word on Jalen Saunders

August, 18, 2012
NORMAN, Okla. -- As Jalen Saunders continues to display explosiveness and playmaking ability during Oklahoma’s preseason camp, the Sooners are hoping the Fresno State transfer is eligible to play in 2012 by the NCAA.

Is there reason for hope? Maybe.

“He had some personal issues and some medical issues that were a big part of his decision,” receivers coach Jay Norvell said. “It was more non-football related.”

Generally speaking, a transfer has a better chance to be cleared immediately if his reasons for transferring are not football related. There is no timetable for a decision on Saunders’ status.

Meanwhile, the Sooners have been giving Saunders regular reps during preseason practice but will likely have to make a decision how to handle him in the near future with game week approaching.

“It’s only a problem if you make it one,” Norvell said of trying to balance Saunders’ practice reps while his status remains unclear.
