Big 12 primer: Week 9
Those, among others, will be the storylines to watch in Week 9 of the Big 12:
No. 19 Oklahoma State at Iowa State, 11 a.m. CT (FSN): Ames has been a disaster zone for the Cowboys. Oklahoma State is just 2-5-1 its last eight trips there, including a loss two years ago that knocked the Cowboys out of the national title game. But will the Cyclones be up for mustering another upset after such a demoralizing loss last week at Baylor?
No. 10 Texas Tech at No. 15 Oklahoma, 2:30 p.m. CT (Fox): The Red Raiders have split the last eight meetings with the Sooners. But the last two times the game has carried Big 12 title implications on both sides, Tech has gotten annihilated. Quarterback play will be huge in this game. Tech true freshman Davis Webb is making just his second career road start. But Blake Bell has struggled in his last three games.
West Virginia at Kansas State, 2:45 p.m. CT (FS1): The winner of this game could take a strong step forward toward securing a bowl berth. The loser will have to scramble. West Virginia had an encouraging offensive performance in last week’s 37-27 loss to Texas Tech. But Bill Snyder is sure to have a stout game plan coming off the open week.
No. 8 Baylor at Kansas, 6 p.m. CT (ESPNU): The good news for Kansas is that Baylor is averaging just 36 points per game in the state of Kansas. The bad news? The Bears are averaging 71 everywhere else. Kansas has been a decent first-quarter team, but poor QB play has prevented the Jayhawks from unlocking any staying power.
Texas at TCU, 6:30 p.m. CT (FS1): After knocking off Oklahoma two weeks ago, the Longhorns can assert themselves as legit Big 12 contenders with a win in Fort Worth. TCU is out of the conference race because of a thoroughly inept offense that has been shut out in the first half in three of four Big 12 games.
