NORMAN, Okla. -- Demontre Hurst wants to be a cornerstone of Oklahoma’s defense this season. The senior cornerback has been lauded by new defensive coordinator Mike Stoops as a consistent and dependable standout on his defense.

Hurst returns after earning second team All-Big 12 honors. He has locked up a spot in Stoops' defense and is a veteran in the secondary, having started 27 of 40 career games, yet his hunger to improve still remains.

“I try to press myself forward,” Hurst said of what pushes him each day. “I know guys look up to me and I don’t want to have a setback and think ‘I’m that guy.’ I really want to press forward and get better. Day in and day out, I preach to these guys, ‘Let’s get better today.’”

Strong leadership is key to any championship team, so having Hurst emerge as a quality leader and playmaker could help the Sooners limit the silly mistakes that lead to a disappointing season in 2011.
