When talking about Broken Arrow (Okla.) High School, the first name to pop up last two seasons has been Watch List running back Devon Thomas.
Originally an Oklahoma commit, Thomas flipped to Oklahoma State a few weeks ago. But another top Broken Arrow name to watch is junior linebacker Gyasi Akem.
Akem’s sophomore season was erased because of a torn ACL, but he was impressive this season.
He has an offer from Arkansas State and is on the radar of several top programs such as OU, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State.
With his junior season under his belt, Akem is ready to explore his options as junior days get closer and closer.
SoonerNation: Missed your entire sophomore season but able to stay healthy this season. How would you evaluate your season?
Gyasi Akem: Overall I felt it was really good. There are still some things I need to work on. The mental part of the game was something I had to adjust to -- being ready to play at all times.
SN: For people that haven’t seen you play, what would you say is your biggest strength as a player?
Akem: My pass rush is what I think helps set me apart from other players. I’m very quick off the ball and know how to close.
SN: You were able to make an unofficial visit to Texas A&M earlier this season. How did that go for you?
Akem: It was a lot of fun. It was great to be able to talk to all the coaches and get to know them better. All the traditions are cool there. I would love to be able to make second trip.
SN: There wasn’t much communication between yourself and OU during the season. But that has changed here recently, right?
Akem: It has. It sort of came out of nowhere. I’ve been invited to junior day [Jan. 12]. I should be able to attend. I can’t think of a reason why I couldn’t go. I’ve been getting more and more letters from them now.
SN: Have you been able to see the campus?
Akem: Not this season. It just never really worked out. It’s something I really want to do, and I hope junior day is the start.
SN: We’re talking OU, but you’re an admitted Oklahoma State fan. How are things between you and the Cowboys?
Akem: I am a fan. But recruiting is not about being a fan. I’m going to go where I fit in best. I was supposed to go to one of their games this season but something happened. I’ve been invited to their junior day.
SN: Still early in the process, but who are your favorites?
Akem: My choice? I don’t have offers from all of them, but my favorites are OU, OSU, A&M, Kansas State and probably Missouri, too.
